Kaolin clay is a naturally occurring mineral from weathering aluminum silicate minerals. In nature, kaolin plays a role in soil fertility by enhancing soil structure, nutrient retention, and plant growth. Industrially, it has applications in ceramics, paper, and cosmetics. Finally, in architecture, it can be seen in experimentation with biomaterials, such as this Kaolin Clay Composite.
This composite is made of sodium silicate, sodium hydroxide, and water to form a material suitable for diverse design purposes. Sodium silicate acts as a binder, while sodium hydroxide serves as a catalyst, aiding in the solidification process.
The resulting dried composition yields a sturdy object with future potential to cast and 3D print solid modules.

Time:
20-30mins for a volume of roughly 10 cubic cms
Difficulty:
4/10
COMPOSITION
Water
5% water
Sodium Silicate
10%, also known as water glass
Kaolin Clay
80% Kaolin Clay
Sodium Hydroxide
5% sodium hydroxide
method
1. Mix water glass, sodium hydroxide, and water in a container to form a homogeneous solution.
2. Gradually add kaolin clay into the solution while stirring continuously to ensure even distribution.
3. Continue stirring until a smooth, lump-free mixture is achieved.
4. Pour the composition into a mold, or potterbot tube(for 3D printing) ensuring it fills all cavities evenly.
5. Allow the mold to sit undisturbed for 24-48 hours to dry and solidify.
6. Once dried, carefully remove the solid object from the mold.
